According to a report by Reuters, despite political danger signs, conservatives in Washington are pushing forward with proposals to change America's social safety net. Following their recent tax overhaul victory, Republicans have called for tougher work and job training requirements be applied to assistance programs such as Medicaid and food stamps. John Feehery, a Republican strategist, warned that following deep tax cuts for corporations, critics will say the party wants to “pay for it by slashing benefits to poor people. They just don’t need that right now."
